Hello! Tell us all about your show!
My show this year, is kind of about how I seem to have a knack, for putting my foot in it. I think a lot of people do. So I think this years show will be my most relatable. Comics always talk about finding their comedic voice, and I think this year will be the best example of what my comedic voice is so far. Hilarious story telling, based in an awkward truth. An enjoyable, relatable hour.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
So many, there is an abundance of talent every year at the fringe. In so many different areas. As I have performed at The Stand Comedy Club for the past few years. I know first hand just how good their programming is for the fringe. So the first acts I’m excited to see are: Chris Rutter & Matthew Gallagher. Who have both been given funding from the stand to perform their debuts with them this year. I have gigged with them loads and have watched them get better and better and I cannot wait to see their first hours.
Next up on my list is, Marjolein Robertson, Marjolein always curates shows that are both wonderfully funny and a gift in story telling. Truth be told, I’m really quite annoyed at how good her shows always are. You can’t go the the fringe and not stop and see Tom Stade. A master at work, who always has me in stitches.
Last, but definitely not least. My good buddy, Robin Grainger (a sneaky assembly recommendation here) I have known, been friends with and gigged with Robin since I started stand up. Every time I love watching him. I could go on for days here but I can’t name everyone, especially when this should be about me.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I have done the fringe in some form or other since 2012. Honestly? I still have no idea how best to meet it. It’s about enjoying it. Don’t try control too much. Just know that you will come out of it stronger than you went in, however she is a beast, and she will land some punches. Some days will be tough, however I always miss it when it’s over. Every. Single. Year.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
As someone that grew up fairly locally and still lives on the outskirts of Edinburgh, im very lucky to wake up in my own bed. I try to relax as much as possible. (The best time to cash in on my inherent laziness, and get out of doing the housework). I like to get to my venue 2 hours before my show. I usually spend this time chatting to staff (stream team, box office or venue – depending on who isn’t busy and I can annoy). I know all these people year round so it’s a lovely slice of normal for me. There is terrace bar near my venue where I always go to decompress after shows, or kill time till my next gig. It’s a hidden gem, so I’m not going to name it and spoil it here.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Ohhh, it really depends. If I want a sit down meal, it has to be Chez Jules. If I’m running between shows, unfortunately it’s a meal deal (usually from boots, don’t ask me why) There is one place, I go to every year without fail. If you see me here, I’ve been out drinking and I’m having this before I get a taxi home. It’s the delightful, amazing, delicious Palmyra Pizza. It’s the Chicken Shawarma wrap, and I dream about these all year. I know I can get these all year round, but it hits different during the fringe.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
You will come out of it a better performer, it’s impossible not to. Also all your friends are there, it’s the only time of year you know that so many people you rarely get to see will all be in one place. It’s just the best time.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Again, thankfully I get to go home every night. However I will usually drag my wife into town with me most days, and she will sit in the green room, because AND I QUOTE. “I’ve seen it enough”
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Oh god no, no one should take financial tips from me. Martin Lewis, I am not.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
Instagram, Facebook and I do have X but I consider deleting it everyday. So ideally Instagram.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Hilarious, true, oversharing.
