Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of The Prodigy’s music. I grew up with their music and their style was so iconic that they really stood out. Some of their videos are phenomenal and I realised there was a lot of them I had not watched so I thought it would be good to take a look at this month.

Firestarter – The Prodigy

Why did you choose this particular video?

I vividly remember this song when it was released, it became number one in the charts and it was always on the television. It is a song that is loud and it was so different to anything else that was around at the time. It works incredibly well and the music video.

So, what is the narrative?

The music video takes place in the sewers and whilst there is not a distinctive narrative as such it is incredibly striking. It has mayhem, a punk style feel and is a lot of fun.

Favourite parts of the video

The black and white colour grade makes this video work so well. It is so punky and striking and it is one of the main parts that I remember strongly of this video. The grade works so well with the bold eyeliner, the distinct boldness and it makes it feel really different.

The simple edits work so well in this video as it brings you into this dark world that you have entered. Again, it plays a back seat but creates the punch that you want in this style of song.

The lighting again plays such a vital role in this video. Even though the video is in black and white, you can tell it has been specifically placed in certain and particular angles in the shot to really highlight the look of the shot.
