Hello! Tell us all about your show!
Hi! I’m so glad you asked. Remember that white, sperm-like sub named Titan from a company called OceanGate filled with billionaires on a trip to view the Titanic wreckage went missing and ultimately imploded, killing all five souls onboard? (rip.) Well, I do. I think about it every day; I dream about it – and I’m not a regular sleeptalker but I do record/track my sleep every night and last week, on 16/5/26, at 5.26am AEST I said, ‘-steps to the boat’, referring, of course, to the “accomodation stairs” that were placed on the side of the mothership (the Polar Prince) to transfer Mission Specialists (paying passengers) to the dingy (STEWIE) to get out to the LARS (the Launch and Recovery platform) and onboard the submersible Titan (United States Coast Guard, report of the Marine Board of investigation into the implosion of the submersible Titan (CG1788361), August 4, 2025). Basically, for me, it’s Titan Time 24/7.
My show, The Subplot: A Hyperfixation on the Titan Submersible is a darkly comedic multimedia infodump meets theatre show. It’s funny, but also asks big questions about life, death, legacy – attempting to make sense of my self/brain/story/place in this world. I really hope to have you on board.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I have been so overwhelmed by it all, I haven’t got my bearings yet! No one told me there was gonna be a quiz!! But, regardless, always keen to see/know fellow AuDHD/disabled artists! Also, anything ocean related, obvi.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I’ve done Fringe before in Australia, both with The Subplot and my first show, The Aspie Hour. But this will be my first time in Edinburgh! I’ve been warned that I’ll cry – that’s pretty standard though. Very much accepting advice (and I promise I’ll try to remember it!)!
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
Well, I think I’m looking forward to cracking up.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
My autism loves routinemaxxing. Unfortch my ADHD doesn’t. My actual reality exists in a weird liminal space that’s never reliably balanced. Honestly, I just really want to achieve my full skincare routine every day. But I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself (unlike the Titan).
Best thing about performing at the Fringe?
The fact that it feels like you’re really alive. Or sleep deprived. Or both. IDK – ask me after!
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
I’m accepting donations through the Australian Cultural Fund (search The Subplot)
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@sophiesmyth OR @sophiesmythish on basically everything.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Pls I’m desperate.
