Hello! Tell us all about your show!

Our show is based around one question: what if anyone could play in the concert hall?

Concerts of the Future is a VR experience where you step out of the audience and onto the stage. You don’t sit and listen – you play alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The stage is set. Lights dim, the audience rustles. You sit down with five other players, slip on a VR headset, and the orchestra appears around you. You play with custom gestural instruments called AirSticks, and all you need to do is just move your arms to make sound. You can’t play a wrong note!

It’s intimate, immersive, and you don’t need any musical experience. We use cutting-edge technology developed at SensiLab, Monash University, Australia to make it feel like the other performers are right in front of you, and you leave with a video of yourself playing alongside the MSO.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Honestly, too many to name! Plus part of the joy of the Fringe is the show you stumble into at 11pm that you’d never have picked from the programme. But on our list is The Listies: 110% Ready (can’t go wrong) and other House of Oz shows direct from Australia.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

We had an absolute ball at Fringe last year with House of Oz, and this is our second time coming over with them. It’s hard to give advice except to say that there is truly nothing like the Fringe, and no amount of preparation can prepare you for the chaotic and wonderful adventure.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

After grabbing a coffee (which we care very deeply about being from Melbourne), we are religious with walking to the venue every day for at least 30 minutes to get some fresh air and exercise. We start with lots of calibration and checking tech before doors. Once doors open it’s a five-hour run. Groups of five moving through the rooms like a little relay race. After packing down we eat and see as many shows as possible in the remaining time in the day.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

Mother India Cafe! Or Mosque Kitchen

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

The audience. Concerts of the Future only works when someone is willing to put on a headset and trust us for twenty minutes — and Edinburgh audiences are always so curious and willing to try new experiences like this.

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

Most of our luggage is touring gear, so we tend to pack pretty light!

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

Walk everywhere – Edinburgh is small enough that this is totally possible!
