The one thing I love about music is that everyone has their own story to tell – the musician, the lyrics, the way the fans decipher them and also the way a song can also create a memory or a meaning to someone. That is what this new article is all about. Each fortnight, we will take a look at a different song and I will take you as a trip down memory lane as to what it means to me. Welcome to Music Memories.
Track: Modern Swinger
Artist: The Pink Spiders
Original Release Date: 2005
At college, my obsession with finding new bands via the internet started. There was a website, which I have annoyingly forgot the name of it, where bands would have their own page and post a couple of songs and then these profiles would recommend others that you may like. This was in 2006ish which was before Spotify became a thing so this was a very new way of discovering music that was not MySpace.
Bands and musicians like Avril Lavigne had a few songs on it and you could create playlists with the tracks available. It was a way of discovering new music and one of the bands that I came across pretty early was The Pink Spiders. I cannot remember how I found their page but I remember the vivid pink colour and punk rock album cover.
The first song I heard of the band was a track called Modern Swinger and from the beginning I was completely hooked. The track was so different to other music on the scene in the UK as it was very much all about the Indie scene.
It was always sad to me that I never got to see the band live, I think they may of supported Green Day one year but I am not sure. I will always be thankful for them and the amount of time i spent listening to them.
