Hello! Tell us all about your show!

Hi Phoenix Remix! I’m Emily, the writer and performer of BASIC BALD B*TCH. It’s a one-hour, one-woman, one-night-stand of a theatre show about having alopecia and navigating the aftermath of an assault. It’s messy, angry, camp and tender, featuring drag numbers that turn shame into pride. Amy desperately wants to be normal, she wants the perfect wig so she can look completely average, but nothing can hide her fear of something really bad happening… again. This show is not afraid to go to the dark places. Because life can be f***ing dark. But I want nothing more than to leave people feeling empowered in their own skin and dancing their way out of Underbelly.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

I’ve got three. Can I say three? I’m so excited to see ‘Not Another Quiz Night’. Part comedy, part game show, part cabaret, I saw it last year and it was honestly one of the best nights out I’ve had in a long time. Next, I can’t wait to watch ‘Cruising’. A queer romcom about protest and polyamory. What more could you want? Finally, I’m booking a ticket to ‘Buggers’. A haunting psychodrama about artist Francis Bacon and his relationship with George Dyer. I’m hooked already.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

This is my first time taking a show to Fringe! Worryingly, a lot of the advice I’ve had so far is about Fringe flu (like freshers, but more people?). I’ve been told to stock up on vitamin c and drink a LOT of water because week two will be rough. I’ve also been told to make friends with as many people as possible to fight off those lonely solo show feels in week three. And finally, even though it’s week four… don’t drink like a mad woman. You might really want to let your hair down, but your twenty-inch wig won’t be cute the next day. Inevitably, I will end up ignoring all of this advice.

If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?

Fringe is the biggest arts festival in the world. Isn’t that crazy? So many people supporting the arts. This is literally the dream. But there’s also so much going on in the world right now and it’s beautiful to see so many artists exploring urgent stories that need to be told. And I can’t wait to listen.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

Sleep in. This show is a beast and I need my beauty sleep. Then a long vocal warm up (nobody wants to lose their voice in the first week?!). Fuel up for the day. Eating around shows is always tricky but I’m lucky because BASIC BALD B*TCH is at 15.55 so I can still get all my meals in at pretty normal times. But I pack snacks. So many snacks. Most elite snack? Dried mango. SO GOOD RIGHT?!

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

I love a street food van. The Jingle Bus is one of my favourites at Fringe!

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

The city. Edinburgh is such a beautiful place. Fringe can get so hectic and busy but there’s always some place quiet you can go to recharge.

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

A big mug from home so I can make big teas. Oh and a hot water bottle. Because even though it’s August… it’s also Scotland and I always feel the cold.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

As someone who’s had to sell 99% of their wardrobe on Vinted and make money in the most ridiculous ways just to get to Fringe… I feel like I could talk for hours about this. Top 3 tips: Meal prep (pack those lunchboxes kids and travel mug it up). Ticket deals (BASIC BALD B*TCH is part of the 2FOR1 deal!). Campsites (Can’t afford the overpriced hotels? Nearby campsites are a great, cheaper alternative).

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

VIBRANT. JOYOUS. POIGNANT.
