For this weeks show of the week we are heading up to Nottingham for a very special event. MisssImp is holding their show Consenting Partners which is an evening celebrating all things twoprov! The show takes place at Nonsuch Studios at 7.30pm on the 18th May. Throughout the week we will have interviews with a number of the acts performing. This afternoon we speak to DinoProv.
Hello tell us all about who you all are and a little bit about yourselves?
The Dinosaurs are Tyran (Elliott) and Rex (Robert) Hello, my name is Elliott, I do not describe myself as man, I describe myself as a demon from the 5th dimension. I have aspergers syndrome and clinical mental health problems which handicaps my abilities for improv but I love and do it all the same. I love Ice hockey, music, my ps4 and I try to cheat at life and be as free as I possibly can be.
How did the show come about?
Me personally I always love to paint myself, when performing the demon like to paint myself to make me more confident, I got this idea from Finn Balor from WWE. Me and Robert did an improv mask workshop where you do improv with masks on and the idea of doing a show as dinosaurs popped into my head and I laughed very hard.
How did your troupe form?
One thing I always enjoy is making our dear Nick Tyler who is the head director dude of MissImp age terribly with my stark raving bonkers ideas which I have had many over the years and this is one of many. I explained the idea to Robert and he thought it was a great idea so we actually thought bugger it buy the costumes and go for it.
Tell us a little bit about the show that are happening this week?
Tyran and Rex are friends that describe themselves as the best actors of the creatatious period. They believe they are so good that they can give an award winning performance everytime they set foot on stage that they use the food (audience) suggestions to create a sharp rip roaring performance in front of your very eyes.
What is the best thing about being in a twoprov?
The simplicity of just being on-stage with another person. I tend to find have more people on-stage without a script a wee bit harder to get your point across and getting the attention a performance deserves. Sometimes having too many improvisers spoils the broth as they say so just two people bouncing off each other is nice and simple.
So, why dinosaurs?
The idea wasn’t really specific to be dinosaurs, I just knew that inflatable dinosaur costumes exist as I have seen those costume stores you go into when you are shopping for Halloween gear. I just knew being in that particular type of costume would be an interesting thing to do.
Why did you choose the t-rex specifically?
Mainly because they were good value for money on Amazon. But more to the point I think The T-Rex is the most well known of the giant lizards that roamed the planet all those years ago.
Do other dinosaurs make an appearance?
Don’t be daft we are not made of money.
What is the most challenging thing about being a twoprov with a dinosaur ?
There are actually quite a few things, trying not to pop the dinosaur, the fan inside the costume eats battery power, it is very difficult to breathe as the costume is very hot, we really have to project our voices due to the fan so you need a lot of energy to do this thing but mainly I a wee bit tall for my costume so the feet will be floating a bit.
What makes you different to other twoprov acts out there?
I doubt very much that nobody has come up with the idea of doing improv in inflatable dinosaur costumes. But seriously I have never been a fan of static improv where two people are just talking which can often be boring and very forgettable, I have a very short attention span so I like to see very big energy in improv, the crazier the better so that is what we are doing. Even if the improv we do is not spectacular we certainly want to be a spectacle. We definetly want often talked about and remembered after the show
What festivals are you guys planning on heading to this year?
Due to funding it may be a wee bit difficult to attend festivals this year but I plan to hit Splendour festival and if they have day tickets available truck festival in Oxford not because of trucks, it is because A few of my favourite band Wolf Alice are playing there as well as many others I like such as Foals and saltwater sun.
It is the month of May – What festivals are you most looking forward to this summer and why?
Getting my life together, I have been trapped in my bedroom for a few years due to a mental breakdown in the summer of 2017 and hope to get out there more and getting my life back on track, I am training for the Robin hood half marathon so planning on doing an awful lot of running and getting my stamina and body back in shape.
What advice would you give for people thinking about starting an improv troupe themselves?
Sell yourself and have a unique selling point. Simple as. I am a huge WWE fan, Yes I know about all the choreographed stuff but want sells me is a the story they tell inside the ring and how two performers can make each other look good by selling each others moves and making it look as real as possible.
What is the best thing about a night at your show for the audience?
Probably just going out onsatge and the audience seeing what we are they know they are going to see something they did not expect.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
My instagram is elliott.bower.baybay and my twitter is @elliottbower. I am also on Facebook too but please send me a message before adding me as I don’t add people I don’t know because that’s creepy.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
INFLATABLE DINOSAUR IMPROV
QUICK FIRE ROUND
If you could be any famous duo from TV, Film or Music what would your twoprov be and why?
Hale and Pace, many people have forgotten about them but their sketch show was on 10pm Sunday nights and they used to really push the boundaries of funniness before school the next day and it made me laugh so hard they would not get away with the stuff they used to do in this day and age. YouTube man who cant take anything seriously. It describes me in a nutshell.
Who creates the craziest improv characters?
Brian in out Missimp community Nottingham, the man is the funniest person I have ever met.
What is your favourite thing about one another?
Robert is annoyingly handsome. But we bounce off each other well when performing.
What is the thing that the other would go viral for?
Training you to lift things over and over again.
You have £50 in your pocket to buy the other a present – what would you get them and why?
A load of matey bubble bath because he keeps calling me mate.
If you had to release a duet – what would the song be and why?
Boom boom boom by the Outhere Brothers. All you have to do is go now let me hear you say way-oh in the streets and somebody will.
The toughest question of all – last rolo – would you keep it or give it to your twoprov buddy?
Don’t be daft.
