Hello! Tell us all about your show!
In a nutshell, Cruising is a queer romcom about two climate activists trying to destroy a cruise ship. In reality, it’s a lot messier than that. These wannabe activists, Sam and Amelia, are both poly and shortly after their margarita-fuelled meet-cute, they discover that they share the same romantic partner. Chaos ensues. Desperate to prove themselves to each other and their absent partner, they form an unlikely alliance and channel their frustrations and climate anxieties into a campaign of eco-sabotage against the cruise ship.
Amongst other things, this involves rotting fish, guerilla flyering, an exploding plastic whale, and a public take-down of the ship’s cult-like leader, the Captain. As Sam and Amelia become more invested in their mission and take increasingly risky actions, they soften into an unexpected friendship…and maybe something more. While
While Cruising has a hard, knotty core about the climate, direct action, and responsibility, it’s also funny, hopeful and sweet.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Fringe feels like the opportunity to see all the shows you’d never normally see. We’re excited to see lots of weird and wacky productions, to be blown away by some circus, and to laugh until we cry during late night comedy.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
This our first time taking a show to the Fringe and we couldn’t be more excited! Katrina (writer/producer) worked Front of House at the Fringe back in 2019. Her main learning was that with the right mindset, you can survive for a month working and seeing five shows a day while having 5am bedtimes.
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
The rest of the year we’re juggling full-time day jobs with theatre making so the idea of a full month dedicated to creative chaos feels like a dream. We’re looking forward to performing Cruising everyday, seeing how audiences respond to it, and for the conversations it will create. We also can’t wait to meet lots of other artists and see dozens of shows, anything and everything from new writing to circus to comedy, from the absurd to the tear-jerkers to the soul-destroying.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Coffee. Flyering fun. Show at 12:50. More coffee and more flyering. See as many shows as we can. Sleep.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Our budget will be guaranteed to guide us towards the cheap and cheerful options! We’ll definitely be on the lookout for the best burrito spots – that’ll give us a balance of all the food groups to get us through a day, right?
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
We’re excited for people to see our work who never normally would. It will also be great to meet lots of like minded artists. Theatre making can often feel like a lonely graft so it will be good for the soul to be in an environment surrounded by thousands of others who love what they’re doing and are experimenting with their creativity.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
We have lots of friends and family coming to visit who will provide a lovely slice of home during an intense month.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Using our artist pass to see as many of our fellow Pleasance acts as possible!
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
Follow us on Instagram @dreambiteco where we’ll be sharing lots of awesome content leading up to and during the festival.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Protest! Polyamory! Passion!
