Hello! Tell us all about your show!

Hello! So, Target Audience is a new comedy play about a TV production company whose parent company has links to a weapons manufacturer. So, in an attempt to sanitise the image of the defence sector, the producers are tasked with developing a ‘pro-weapons sitcom’. Fact and fiction then start to blur when everyone gets an emergency alert on their phones telling them they are under attack…

The play is basically a satire on big tech companies who seem to have infiltrated all aspects of our societies, particularly our media landscapes and our defence sectors. Take Amazon for example, they are simultaneously a huge movie studio whilst also owning a platform that hosts AI software used in drone warfare. I find this bizarre and all a bit frightening!

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Well, I am biased about this first one as I’m directing it, but the character comedy show Rob Preston: Amazing Global Solutions is going to be a tour de force; it’s brilliant, mad and bursting with so many gags. I also can’t wait for Molly Windust’s one woman show Rockpools, the character comedy hours Emmeline Downie: Gail and Em Humble: Lady of the Lakes, and the stand-up shows Rohan Sharma: Sharmy Infinity and Marty Gleeson: Dog Ear. Finally, I saw sketch group Burger and a Pint open for Amanda Knox earlier this year, and they both really blew me away – so I can’t wait for both those shows!!

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I have done the fringe before! The best advice I can give is to just be yourself (unless you are performing in a show, then you should definitely be the character as written!!).

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

I start the day by walking into town. Although it’s only a thirty minute walk, this takes most of the morning as I proceed to have six hundred 3-minute conversations with some of my closest acquaintances. Then it’s time for coffee, admin and a pastry before I seriously consider retraining to become something useful like a nurse and then it’s showtime! Post show I slink off for a solo redbull and a curry.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

There’s a lovely Turkish restaurant at the top of Arthur’s Seat that does an above-average Künefe.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

Not being in the office! (If my boss is reading this then Anouska please don’t fire me, I have already put a deposit down for a flat for Fringe 2027, I need this job please)

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

I like to bring a huge book of contemporary fiction, preferably in translation, which I have on my person at all times throughout the festival, but it’s very important to me that – despite my best intentions – I don’t read a single word.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

You’re not gonna like it but it’s grains. You will almost always find me eating millet out of a tupperware in George Square. And if I’m not doing that, then something has gone deeply wrong.
