Hello! Tell us all about your show!

Glass Child is a show we created with two siblings who grew up in regional Australia, Kayah and Mitreyah Guenther. Kayah has Down Syndrome and Maitreyah, his younger sister, has watched as he has been ridiculed or ignored his entire life. Using dance, theatre and powerful, autobiographical storytelling, the show asks us to see the world through the lens of another person’s experience and asks us why we find it so hard to understand each other.

The term ‘Glass Child’ refers to the sibling of someone with special needs who often becomes a facilitator in the family, someone who is “looked through”. It is a powerful, raw and emotional work, that moves beyond fiction and theatrical conventions to showcase their extraordinary love for each other. Glass Child puts a microscope on their connection and how their relationship has shifted over the years, with dance as their common, evolving language. By bravely revealing their personal experience they show us all how much we all have in common.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Everything. I’ve never been, so I want to just experience the city and the festival in all its chaos and madness. I’m excited to step into shows I know nothing about and to see what people are concocting in response to the world as it stands.(or falls – not to be a downer…).

If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?

Things that totally surprise me. Things I could never expect. I don’t want to just see a bunch of well crafted versions of peroformances I’ve seen a million times. I want to see stuff with warts and all, where the artist or artists are trying something totally different, where they have invested all of their creativity and love to make something that is vulnerable, edgy and uniquely them.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

We’re still making that up! Kayah, Maitreyah and Mum Leanne will be there with me adding support. We will go exploring in the morning, then meet up to do a warm up class and a psych up session. In the past we’ve always joked about how Kayah needs to prepare himself to “release the beast”, something he is pretty damn good at doing. This guy responds to an audience like nobody else, and both he and Maitreyah have performed this show enough that they know what they are doing. The story is theirs after all. It’s their lives they’re sharing, so all I can do is make sure they’re in the right frame of mind and body to do so.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

Don’t know yet. I’m currently vegan, let’s see how that goes. I’ve heard a lot about deep fried Mars Bars.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

The excitement. The volume. The noise of so many artists in one place. It’s like an adventure zone for weirdos (I hope).

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

Kayah has his own range of merch, Keep Going is the label. He’s a decorted weightlifter, just got first in a national comp, so I’m sure his t-shirts

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

Pack your lunch.
