It is festival season and that means that in the next month there is so many great comedy festivals to look forward to! This month we are looking at some of the great shows that you can see at the Edinburgh Fringe. Hello! An A to Z Guide to Dating is a one woman comedy musical based on a dating advice book my mother wrote in the 80s in which I play my own mother.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Oh gosh there are too many to list, but a few include Bryn Woznicki’s Smut, Bebe Cave’s Swoon, Operotica’s Lovers in Every Lifetime, Sarah Robert’s Scary Movie 7 and this great kids musical Cricket and the Freebugs. I’m sure there will be plenty of other amazing discoveries on the road there.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
Yes! I’ve been to Fringe every year (almost, my company was meant to bring our debut show in 2020) since moving to the UK and this is my 5th year in the show at the Fringe in some sort of artistic/professional capacity. The advice I always give to people at the start is to think of it as summer camp, remember to enjoy it! It feels like the stakes are so high but at the end of the day, we’re all coming together to make art and have fun.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
I am staying with an absolutely lovely lady named Shirley in Stockbridge for the second time. The last time I was there I made very good use of the pool/spa/steam room by hers to keep the voice warmed up in the morning. I always still work my day job during Fringe, at Greenlit.com, a crowdfunding platform that often supports fringe projects, so my days are scheduled around onboarding calls with creatives.
My show is at 5:15, and I plan to properly warm up before each show this time (even if it’s on the walk into town). Afterwards, my plan this year is to not enjoy myself too much late night… a first for me, but we’ll see how responsible I am!
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
I adore haggis so I make sure to eat as much as possible while I’m in Scotland. While these days, I’ve learned to be more frugal, you’re likely to catch me eating some tinned fish from Lidl in the Meadows, my first year, we celebrated our sold out run with a meal at the Witchery. Someday hopefully I will be able to afford to return!
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The people! Where else can you find an audience full of dedicated theatre lovers? There’s nothing better than a good fringe audience or hang out.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Hmm, the main special comfort objects I bring are spells and crystals etc although Edinburgh is a great place to be a witch (I always spend way too much at Black Moon Botanica)!
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Aside from the aforementioned Lidl tinned fish, I also am a big fan of getting tinnies ahead of going out instead of shelling out for multiple pints or cocktails! There are so many good places in Edinburgh to picnic.
