Hello! Tell us all about your show!

Hello! My show is called Cult Classic, and it’s my second hour at the fringe. When I was a weird teenager I always thought, well if life doesn’t work out when I’m older, I could always join a cult. That’s always been the back up plan – like getting into a cult on clearing.  And now I’ve become a weird adult, I’m like, is it time to whip out my plan b? I’m exploring what success means, where to find my   community, and if it’s time to don some Nike trainers and carve an x into my forehead.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

I’m always excited to see anything Jordan Brookes does. There are some comics you kind of know what you’re getting when you go to see them – Jordan is just not one of them. I’m also looking forward to seeing Tom Towelling, Ruby Carr and Hasan Al-Habib.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

My main advice would be, stop telling everyone you’re going to their shows. You just won’t. You’re not going to see the history of puppetry told through the eyes of a ventriloquist dummy just because the guy in it chatted you up last night.

And stay away from guys who act like puppets are people.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

If I’m honest I’ll sleep til 10/11, get an iced coffee, and take it for a big walk with a podcast or a song I’m stuck on (I’ll ultimately ruin that song for myself by associating it with pre-show nerves and have a flood of adrenaline when it comes up on Spotify shuffle). Then I’ll go see a friend’s show, get an iced coffee, and probably head back to my accomodation to look over my show and do any rewrites, probably with an iced coffee. Then I’ll have a tiny panic attack, so I’ll have an iced coffee to help calm down.

I’ll stick on either some Trisha paytas YouTube videos or a documentary about North Korea to listen to while I put my face on, sipping on an iced coffee while my heart beats like a little hummingbird. I’ll go do my show, with some anxious edge to it that just comes naturally to me. Then I’ll have a couple of drinks with people I like, get the bus back, and lie in bed unable to sleep. If I could sleep I would dream about iced coffee.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

Noodles and Dumplings on South Clerk Street. I don’t know if I’ve ever not gone there in my first week, if not my first night. But I do really love haggis, so I’m happy with most takeaways in Edinburgh.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

Getting to do your favourite thing every night, to people who have specifically come to see you.

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

My therapist told me I needed to have a grounding scent to keep on me if I get anxious, but my favourite smell is like…damp attics and building sites, and they don’t make that in Lush. So I wandered about in construction sites, picking up rocks and bits of brick to see if they have that specific smell, and put one of them in a tub I carry round. It was dead embarrassing when an old lady saw me scrabbling in some rubble and thought I had lost my ring, because that would be a decent reason to be doing that, and I had to explain ‘no, no, just…smelling some rocks’. Everyone takes the piss out of me, but if I’m anxious it does help snap me back to reality.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

I get the bus everywhere and I’ve made friends with someone who has a spare room.

If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?

My Instagram handle is @hannahtheplatt – it’s the only one I use.

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

                      Cult (comedian?) Classic.
