Hello! Tell us all about your show!
Palm Springs, 1979 – Global icon, Frank Sinatra and the ’70’s aren’t a good fit! He hates retirement and his comeback album flops. Concerts prove he can still pull in a crowd, but he feels out of step with the times. His love-life is still unrequited as he pines for second wife and screen idol, Ava Gardner who has moved to London. Frank makes a mercy dash to woo her back – could they still make it? As he wonders if he’ll ever find that one big hit to redefine him, someone brings him a new song which will not only change the course of his life, but re-define him – ‘New York, New York’. Told through music and song from the privacy of his Palm Spring’s den on New Year’s Eve accompanied by live piano, a bottle of Jack Daniels, memories and regret in front of a small gathered group of invited showbiz pals (Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton included), this brand new show stars multi-award winner, Richard Shelton, following his critically acclaimed show smash-hit, ‘Sinatra: RAW’ wowed critics worldwide. This is the ultimate comeback story!
Written by Bert Tyler-Moore, creator of ‘The Windsors’ (C4) and Richard Shelton.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Catching up with old friends and making some new ones. I like to make a blend of comedy, drama and music and you really can’t beat seeing the Tattoo to rouse the spirits. It’s so atmospheric.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
This is my 11th Fringe. My best advice is to stay calm, wear comfortable shoes and keep your sense of humour – you’re going to need it! Pace yourself – by the end of the second week you’ll be exhausted. Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep and remember why you’re there, but find time to enjoy the glorious mayhem too.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe;
The first morning coffee hit is non-negotiable – it helps me gather my senses, which you’ll need. By late morning, I’m out on the streets with my show flyers, building an audience. It feels like having a newspaper-round but never underestimate the power of being given a flier –courteously – by a person from the show and it’s a great way to engage with your audience. Grab something nutritious to eat. Taking time out is as necessary as the fun. My show is in the afternoon, so I take a rest afterwards, then grab a shower and go out to see what the night holds and which shows appeal. Fringe can be a long slog, but it’ll be over before you know it, so ‘carpe diem!’
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
I always start the Fringe with a haggis dinner at Arcade Bar Haggis in Cockburn Street. After that, the street food is just terrific. The Witchery at the top of the Royal Mile is a great place for a celebration dinner at the end of the Fringe if you’re feeling flush!
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
It reminds you you’re truly alive and doing what you love. The Fringe is full of hope, opportunity, and fun. It can be demanding, but simply being there is an achievement—own it and build on it. Anything beyond that is a bonus.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
A small cafetiere.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Exchange tickets for your show with others. Buy your own food and make your own meals most days. Eating out is easy and enticing but it soon gets pricey.
