Hello! Tell us all about your show!
Hello! Giraffe is a one-woman comedy play about masking, misdiagnosis and the consequences of spending 30 years believing there’s something wrong with you. (Also dead parents, queer identity, Jewish identity and being too tall… not necessarily in that order.)
It’s semi-autobiographical (though I have to stress that I have no history of stalking… given that the play’s inciting incident is the main character receiving a restraining order! Cute!)
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m so excited to be back at the Fringe for the first time in eight years and see some of the comedians and shows I loved back then that are still coming up! I am also totally unbiasedly excited to see my friends’ work; Andrew Doherty is a comedy genius and is bringing his third show ‘Reviewers Welcome… To Die’ to the Pleasance. Shona Graham has an excellent new play, ‘fractured’, on at Underbelly, and Nick Cassembaum has a brilliantly Jewish show being performed in a real life Sauna. I also love to watch The Durham Revue shows; they’re always excellent and that’s where I started out.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I did three stints from 2014-2016 with The Durham Revue sketch comedy troupe which was a real baptism of fire. I also worked on the Pleasance Arts Reception desk in 2017, and performed half an hour of stand up in a room behind a pub at 10:30 in the morning in 2018; strangely, this show had the best audiences I’ve ever experienced!
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Sleep as long as physically possible, try to find ways to avoid flyering by hook or by crook, do show, have a nervous breakdown about said show, see other people’s shows, sleep some more, repeat!
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
The Mac n’ Cheese van. My God. But keep me away from it…
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The Fringe is a wild rollercoaster like no other I’ve ever experienced. It can bring crushing lows and euphoric highs within the space of the same thirty minutes, and every day and every audience is totally different.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
This year I’m considering bringing my Dog with me and dressing him in a Giraffe onesie to help me flyer!
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
It’s great to use your pass to see as many free shows as possible at the same venue!
