Magic Of The Music Video – The Missed Tapes – Vampire Diaries, MGK

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are doing something a bit different – since I started this article I have had to choose four or five music videos for each month for the selected band or artist I decide to discuss. However, there are some videos that I love that just miss out on entering the top of my favourites so I thought it would be fin this month to do something called The Missed Tapes and have a look at music videos by bands we have previously covered but did not get a chance to shine in the sun.

Vampire Diaries – MGK

Why did you choose this particular video?

This video came outa just after MGK Month and I watched it and felt it needed to be talked about on the Miss Tapes feature. It is a fun video with lots of fun edits in it that make it a good one to talk about.

So, what is the narrative?

MGK is in a museum and is dancing around the rooms as well as performing with the band as well.

Favourite parts of the video?

I think the framing is really interesting in this video as it feels like there has been deliberate choices on the way shots are angled and they feel like there is an element of symmetry. A lot of the shots reel you in and again I think it is because of the way the dance shots are filmed. Even the band shots and the angles like him dancing upstairs or sliding down the banister are very effective.

I don’t tend to talk about sound editing very much in music videos but I feel it needed to be highlighted in this video. The musical interlude is just for the video and the sound is incredibly important, listen to the effects that have been given to every move and step, it really highlights the viewing experience.

The last thing I am going to mention is the use of colour. The colour red is used in nearly every single shot – sometimes obvious (red gloves) or subtle like the tie or the lighting or the walls. It is really effective as the logo for the video is in red and it hints to it throughout and also creates many connotations.
