Magic of the Music Video – Spice Girls Month – Who Do You Think You Are

Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of the Spice Girls. One of the biggest girl groups to ever walk this planet that also have some really interesting music videos. I thought it would be fun to look at some of their videos and editing techniques used to hit to the masses.

Who Do You Think You Are – Spice Girls

Why did you choose this particular video?

This was such an iconic song and one I remember doing the dances a lot as a kid. It is a big part of my childhood so felt I had to talk about it.

So, what is the narrative?

They are a club in different parts sing the song with other people dancing around them.

Favourite parts of the video?

The editing is fast paced in this video which really reels you into the fun of what you are watching. The mixture of close ups, group shots makes it a great video.

The colours also make this video – bold purples, reds, greens make the whole video pop and creates vibrancy to the song and the video. It is sort of a metaphor for the Spice Girls as well as it portrays they are bold and sassy.

A white light is used in this video and it creates a real Glitz and glamour feel to it. The white light appears to make everything feel expensive and used in creative ways to really stand out.
