Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of the Spice Girls. One of the biggest girl groups to ever walk this planet that also have some really interesting music videos. I thought it would be fun to look at some of their videos and editing techniques used to hit to the masses.
Holler – Spice Girls
Why did you choose this particular video?
I think it is important to look at a Spice Girls video that was created at the time when there was no Geri Halliwell as she left the band. I thought it was important to see the difference in video style and if the style change.
So, what is the narrative?
The girls are in a big metal triangle singing and then for their solo pieces they have these Individual styles such as Emma under water, Victoria in the light.
Favourite parts of the video?
This video is graphics heavy and again it has that futuristic feeling that videos around this era had. This means silver mirrors, futuristic shapes to create this modern tech feel. The most predominant one is the triangle but there is evidence of green screen though.
You can tell they were sort of trying to reinvent themselves as the editing is in time to the beat and there are parts where it looks like the image is moving drastically to hit the beats of the song.

Lighting is used predominantly in this video to create certain focus on the Spice Girl’s. in Victoria Beckham shots it is all about a whit light, blue for Emma, gold for Mel C and bronze for Mel B. It creates a dramatic feel throughout and makes it have a sophisticated look.
