For The Love Of Improv – Edinburgh Improv Fest INTERVIEW – Squeaky Bum Time

This month for Improv Corner we are celebrating acts that are performing at the Edinburgh International Improv Festival. The event happens between the 5th-8th of March and has some fantastic acts performing. Today we are speaking to Squeaky Bum Time to find out all about them.

Tell us about:

Your latest improv show you are bringing to Edinburgh Improv Fest?

Our style is an audience interview or “living room” opening that dissolves into longform scenes. We like to play with the full spectrum—going from fast and wild to slow and grounded.

Your favourite suggestion you have been given?

Honestly, I can’t remember a single one. I tend to go into a total fugue state for the first 5 minutes of a show.

Your favourite venue to perform at:

The Scottish Storytelling Centre has a huge place in my heart as it’s where I first saw my improv heroes, but the heart of the Edinburgh International Improv Festival is the real “home” for us. We’re buzzing to bring that energy to Monkey Barrel this year.

Improv hero:

Suzi Barrett for her incredible Yes Also library. Also Will Hines and Billy Merritt—watching them at my first EIIF was the “lightbulb moment” where I realized: “THIS is what I want to do.”

Dream venue to play at:

The Hydro in Glasgow. Dream big.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Pure excitement with a healthy sprinkling of dissociation so I don’t have to question what in God’s name I’ve chosen as a hobby.

The hardest improv suggestion to perform and why:

There’s no such thing as a hard suggestion in a fugue state. Even “Octopus”—you just think of the wee suckers and suddenly someone’s yelling, “Sucka’s get in here!” and we’re off.

Essential items you always take with you to a show?

My teammates… and a very specific pre-show/post-show discussion about the quality of our respective Meal Deals.

Describe your fans in three words:

Hard to identify.

What we can look forward to from you this year:

Doing loads of shows, maybe more festivals. Developing more awesome learning opportunities to improve ourselves and bringing as many passionate improvisers along for the ride as possible.
