Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hello! I am a comedian and writer from Fife, Scotland. This is my 5th hour long Edinburgh fringe show so you’d think it’d have to be half-decent
Tell us all about your show!
My show is all about my life and my life is all about looking after my girlfriend and my dog who love me but seem to be out to destroy me. It’s about whether I’m ready to start a family and if this is the kind of world I’d want to bring a child into and it’s also about the 4 times I saw Noel Edmonds this year.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’ll definitely go see Ayo Adenekan’s debut show, and I think this might be the year I finally see the Ladyboys of Bangkok.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I have done quite a few Fringes now. My advice would be to work as hard as possible while writing and previewing the show and to give the performance 100%l every day whilst also remembering that no-one west of the cafe ‘Lovecrumbs’ even remotely cares about the Fringe.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
On average it’d be waking up not-quite-hungover-but-definitely-not-fresh at about 10.30, putting gym clothes on. Walking past the food I’d bought-in that’s in the fridge and past the gym to Hank’s Sandwich Bar. When they ask if I want a ‘side salad’ I’ll say yes knowing that their definition of salad is pasta, noodles and coleslaw.
Make plans to see a friend’s show before my show, fail to get to their venue in time. Do my show. Go to Wings with a friend whose show finishes about the same time as mine. Couple beers in Barrel Bar, go to a couple shows, get a 4/10 chips, cheese and pakora from Yum Yums.
Fall asleep to an old episode of The Real Hustle on Youtube. Repeat. I’m getting excited now thinking about doing all this.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
If we’re consulting the data it’d have to be Wings, me and Marc Jennings must have gone there more than 10 times last year it was getting embarrassing. If I’m being fancy I’d go to one of Stuart Ralston’s restaurants, my girlfriend and I met during Fringe so we celebrate our anniversary on our day off, maybe we’ll go to Aizle this year.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
That people choose to spend a bit of money and an hour of their time on your show is a genuine pleasure that never gets old. Especially when they come back year on year.
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
It’s physically and emotionally demanding, the cumulative effect of so many performances does something weird to your body and your throat and your adrenaline gets shot to pieces. It’s also the easiest place in the world to compare yourself to others, which is not good news for anyone’s Men’s Mental Health, I don’t care who you are.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
I bring my sliders, my golf clubs and the dog.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
You can’t really argue with £2 Pizza Slice if you need to eat between shows. Also not everyone seems to know this but Monkey Barrel always keep back pay-what-you-want tickets so if you’re happy to queue you can see some amazing shows for cheap.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Rain jacket, Vocalzones, Casio watch. You always need another 20 good jokes as well.
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
Pay someone younger than you to do it who haven’t learned to hate themselves yet. Ideally a North American.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
Please follow me on instagram! @stuartmcpherson_
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
It’s pretty funny!
