A solo show is never an easy thing to do, it can be ten times harder when you decide to intertwine sketch and elements of improv into a show. Well, everyone step aside because noone can create one as unique as Steen Raskopoulos.
It’s hard to put the show Friendly Stranger into a box as it is a mix of a lot of things – audience participation, sketch, improv and pure thought out silliness. As soon as you walk into the room you are in Steens world.
The show is full of short skits that are fun and turn out in ways you do not expect. There are some stand out ones including a crime film, a interesting take on Barbenheimer and music.
Since starting this website in 2015, I have reviewed and seen a lot of improv based shows as this website was predominantly focussed on that comedy format. I can honestly say out of all the improv shows I have seen this is going into my top ten as to how fantastic it is.
I have never seen improv games incorporated that way before and Steen creates such a safe, warm and fun environment that even the shyest audience members are willing to get involved. The last audience improv based skit I was convinced the audience member wasn’t going to help and what happened before my eyes at a job interview blew my little mind and that is all I am going to say as don’t want to ruin it. This all happened because Steen created this safe space.
Another thing I have to praise is the work with imaginary objects on stage, again one of the best interactions I have seen in an improv based show. His object work is phenomenal.
This comedy show is unique and you should make it your duty to go and see it.
