REVIEW – Comedy At The Fringe – MC Hammersmith: Straight Outta Brompton

I was introduced to the world of MC Hammersmith a very long time ago and I am sure that I interviewed him for this website right near the beginning. However, I have never had a chance to see his act live. I had heard a lot of buzz around him the whole of this Fringe so I knew it must be a show that was something special.

As an improviser and the founder of this site, I write a lot about improv and I have also interviewed well over 500 acts from worldwide. I have also seen a lot of improv shows, some good, some not so great and others that are great. I can count on one hand the amount I have seen that have been mind-blowing, exceptional and this is a show that is now included in that list.

Right from the start, this show is complete entertainment, it is big, it is bold and more importantly it is very funny. If you want an example of an improv show that exemplifies the magic of can create then this is the show to see.

Before the show starts, you are asked to submit suggestions that can be used in the show, with other improv acts I have seen at the Fringe it usually is pieces of paper given to only selected parts of the queue. This show has a QR code on the screen which allows anyone to give a suggestion which I thought was a great touch.

The thing that makes this show work so well is the juxtaposition of a private school boy being incredibly good at rapping using every swear word under the sun and making things like Waitrose sound tough and hardcore.

MC Hammersmith is an incredibly talented individual and you can understand right from the start why his shows are selling out day after day. This is an amazing music improv show and I urge you to go and book a ticket to see it right this minute!
