REVIEW – Comedy At The Fringe – Character Building Experience

We sent our reviewer Damian to see Character Building Experience

The blurb for Character Building Experience says that it’s “A Dungeons and Dragons-style comedy and interactive roleplaying game show, suitable for the experts, the novices and the uninitiated but curious.”

I am very much in the last category and excitedly take my seat.

Sasha enters the room wearing a sparkly cape which is outshone by her high energy and enthusiasm. She uses audience cheer-based poll-taking to find that quite a few of us have seen the show before (surely a good sign!). She asks for a cheer from those who have never played Role Playing Games and I am the only one to yelp. True to her blurb, I’m made very welcome and the show soon begins. Three guest comedians are introduced: each has a unique “character sheet” created by Sasha. These define them as, for example, a wizard, or having an invisible dagger, or the ability to shoot butter from their fingers!

Each show will have different characters, and Sasha has designed quests and worlds for her guest’s to explore. A special die helps her decide whether the guests are successful in their attempts to progress. It’s part panel-show, part adventure story, part improv. Sasha keeps the energy up and the story flowing; all 4 performers are funny and engaging. The quest element is really just a frame for the hilarity.

Despite knowing nothing of D&D, I laughed along with the aficionados. Which was a lot!

A few times they may have forgotten the 12+ show rating, so if you’re worried about that, I suggest reminding the host when you arrive.

I think Sasha Ellen more than keeps the promise of her blurb!
