Hello! Tell us about yourself?

I’m Elisabeth Gunawan, I’m a performer and artist but with Ed Fringe coming up, most of the time I just answer emails and look at excel sheets and cry. JOKING. Not really.

How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the Fringe?

‘Unforgettable Girl’ — the title encapsulates the tropes of male and female desire that we all aspire to be. The piece explores how women, and particularly women of color who have been so marginalized from narratives of beauty, womanhood and freedom, would destroy and reshape ourselves into these tropes in order to survive.

Tell us all about your show!

Unforgettable Girl is a bouffonesque dark comedy—when you come you’ll meet Vaccine, a mail order bride that’s come delivered via Amazon Prime promising to be the cure for the deadlier pandemic of loneliness. Although a mail order bride is a promise of loveliness and servitude, Vaccine does the opposite—she makes us squirm and wince and laugh. Throughout the ritual of the piece, we see the different layers of her performance peeled back one by one.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the Fringe?

To name a few: BEAUTIFUL EVIL THINGS by Theatre Ad Infinitum,

All these shows I’ve heard loads of buzz about, and are created by artists I really admire, some of them I’ve actually seen in earlier iterations, so I’m excited to see it fully blossomed!

What have been some of your favourite shows to date and why?

Last year, my favorite show at the Fringe was Mr. Moon by the Moon Cabaret. It was breathtaking, magical, sensuous, musical, like a beautiful party! I can’t remember exactly the songs or the story but I still remember the feeling crawling on my skin.

Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?

That has got to be one of the rapid fire questions I ask the audience every night: ‘Rich people – eat them or marry them?’

What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?

I recently saw Lucy Hopkins perform ‘Dark Mother’, which she did last year at the Fringe. I don’t know how to describe the show other than that  I laughed, I was sometimes shocked and ashamed at what I laughed at, I recognized myself, I recognized my mother, it was bittersweet acidic funny!

Best thing about performing at the Fringe?

The energy in Edinburgh during the Fringe is just so magical. No matter if you’re tired and sleeping on a couch and have a cold coming on, you walk down the street and feel like an Emily Breeze song. It just is electrifying!

The most challenging thing about performing at the Fringe?

Still feeling quite out of place as an artist of color at the Fringe. It’s odd even having an ‘artists of color’ category in the catalogue. I know that the intention is good and is meant to highlight voices that have been historically marginalized, but being cordoned off by a tickbox does hold the risk of Othering us even more. I think there is a momentum brewing and I really hope that our community is going to bring about slow but steady change.

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the Fringe?

Good raincoat, a fanny pack, hot sauce.

What’s the secret to successful flyering?

Calibrating your definition of success to what’s appropriate and attainable! I’ve made a pact in my group that we are going to have as much fun as we can in this process, and that means taking care of ourselves (ie. not flyering ourselves to near exhaustion!)

Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?

Madonna.

If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?

I am @elisabettygun on Instagram.

And finally, in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

Hilarious, mythical, terrifying
