Hello! Tell us about yourself?
We’re Bowjangles and we’re genre spanners – music, comedy, theatre, singing, dance (as long as it doesn’t involve arms because they’re busy making the instruments work).
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the Fringe?
We always knew your next show would be “in Space” as we wanted to mine the sci-fi music channel, and we felt ready to take on a classic with Dracula – which opened up a whole catalogue of horror sounds too.
Tell us all about your show!
It’s the story of a string quartet who realise that fringe theatre isn’t getting them anywhere so they decide to blast off into space for the one revenue stream that can support them in their hour of need: corporate entertainment. Things start to go weird when they meet a kindly benefactor who promises to make them megastars of the classical music industry. It kind of follows the story of Dracula but there’s way more songs and feminist anthems about periods than the original text.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the Fringe?
Ezme and Mitch will be making music for Woven and Ollie improvises music Austentatious and hosts BattleActs! so I guess we’ll have to see those.
Otherwise we’re excited about Buffy: Revamped (right up our street), Egg: Absolutely Fine (we love those women) , Madame Chandelier is amazing and makes classical music so accessible and we’re really looking forward to Sophie’s Suprise 29th, we had the pleasure of working with Katharine, Nathan and Isis in a Black Cat Cabaret show a few back and we know this will be really silly and fun.
Have you done the Fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the Fringe.
This will be our fourth fringe as Bowjangles and our advice is: celebrate other peoples’ success, don’t compare your experience to anyone else’s and tell everyone if you’ve seen something good
What have been some of your favourite shows to date and why?
We did a short run at the Soho Playhouse NYC in 2019 and because of flights being changed we arrived on the afternoon we were performing. It was so sweaty and so delirious, but it felt like a dream come true.
Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?
In Dracula, Ezme has a throwaway line “oh that name rings a Joshua Bell” – it’s extremely niche and only one audience member ever laughs but we love that nerdy person so much.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the Fringe?
Going to everything with your mind wide open, surprise yourself by booking shows that aren’t what you’d normally see.
Best thing about performing at the Fringe?
Fringe audiences are like nothing else, they get every reference, appreciate the stupidest of jokes and they’re not afraid to laugh loudly.
The most challenging thing about performing at the Fringe?
Deciding it’s a good idea to take in the view from Arthur’s seat before doing a show.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the Fringe?
Effervescent orange flavoured vitamins, fizzy orange flavoured isotonic drink, adequate childcare.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
We’ve been street performers for a combined period of 75 years so we’re not afraid of standing on the street and yelling at people.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Probably someone who thinks they don’t like classical music – our aim is to show people a string quartet isn’t necessarily a serious group of people sitting down and playing quietly.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
Bowjanglesmusic on all platforms!
And finally, in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Read the title.
