Magic of the Music Video – Spice Girls Month – Spice Up Your Life

Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of the Spice Girls. One of the biggest girl groups to ever walk this planet that also have some really interesting music videos. I thought it would be fun to look at some of their videos and editing techniques used to hit to the masses.

Spice Up Your Life – Spice Girls

Why did you choose this particular video?

The future was a huge theme around the end of the nineties as the Millennium brought a world of mystery and potentially a world or technology advancements. this is again a video that uses computer technology to create a fantastic world. This is an iconic Spice Girls video and probably one I have seen the most. However, no matter how many times you see it, you will always see something new.

So, what is the narrative?

The Spice Girls have a space ship and they go around the new world trying to spice up the world of a whole generation.

Favourite parts of the video?

The first thing we have to speak about is the product placement, it is so clever the way all the brands that people know as iconic ones such as Starbucks, Burger King have been changed to Spice Girls. It is so clever and really pushes Spice Girls brand throughout the video.

The color theme is really interesting as it is quite dark and has a lot of elements of grey first to emphasise the future. It reminds me of elements of George Michaels video we discussed in December. Whilst the colour grade is ‘murky’ it works so well and creates quite an empowerment to girl power.

The editing is quick which really reels you into the world of the Spice Girls. It also has an American feel to it as well which probably is why the video works so. It also has a sense of comic book to it as well.
