Off The Record – ALBUM FOCUS – We Can Do Anything, Violent Femmes

Have you ever wanted To listen to a new band or musician and not sure where to start? Well, instead of listening to their commercial music, why not start with something off the album first!  Today we look at the latest album release by this Punk Folk Band – We Can Do Anything by The Violent Femmes

Memory

This song is a fun song to open the album with and the guitars have a really unique sound to them that other bands may not use but is a solid theme for Violent Femmes. The folk punk sound of this band is distinct and really addictive. The most interesting part of the song is when music changes key halfway through the song. Simple lyrics that make an impact with a great melody.

Issues

The bass introduction with a brass instrument is super effective on this song, it is a repetitive melody but really works. The chorus melody is a lot softer but it creates emotion to go along with the dramatic lyrics.

Holy Ghost

The only song I have heard of Violent Femmes before is Add It Up and if you are a fan of that song you will like this one. The lyrics are an interesting set of lyrics tied up with an enriched melody.

Travelling Solves Everything

This song has a very road rail sound to it and the lyrics are very basic but because they are they will get stuck in your head. The instrumental set up is very different to the other songs on the album and it really does sound like a song that would be good to drive to. Highlights for me is the complex musical interludes and the drum beat.

Untrue Love

The bass style guitar at the beginning is heavy and hard hitting and creates the emotion that goes with this song. The lyrics are miserable but it creates a really folk punk meets country sound and it is super effective. The lyrics are droned out and that really emphasises ‘untrue love’.
