Off The Record – ALBUM FOCUS – Dedicated, Carly Rae Jepson

Have you ever wanted To listen to a new band or musician and not sure where to start? Well, instead of listening to their commercial music, why not start with something off the album first!  Today we look at the latest and fourth album from a Canadian musician – Dedicated, Carly Rae Jepson

No Drug Like Me

This album is all about the world of ecstasy and agony that love causes. This song is the second song on the album and is one full of lyrics that take you on a narrative journey throughout that is intertwined with an electronic pop beat that doesn’t follow the generics of the standard song. It is a pleasant song to the ears and has a really creative element to it.

Want You In My Room

This song could of easily been on a Taylor Swift album if the lyrics were more metaphorical then to the point about the bedroom. This song oozes pop elements that are very similar to Swift including the vocals as she sings it in a very similar style. My favourite lyrics is ‘Listen to the pages of my heart’ as it stands out and the end of the song has a saxophone intertwined into the electronic beat which really works.

Happy Not Knowing

This song again follows the generic sound of the album with the electronic style of beat however you can feel that the narrative of the album is changing. This is a good contrast on this song as the music is upbeat and the lyrics are the opposite.

I’ll Be Your Girl

This song has a different style to it and you can feel the emotions in the album changing both narratively and musically which makes this album very clever. This song has a music style that when I first heard it reminded me of Sting as it has a plucky little guitar riff that plays throughout with a ‘sandy’ style drum (if you listen to it you will understand what I mean).

Right Words Wrong Time.

This song again has a different style to again reflect the change in emotion. It sort of intertwines a darker electronic style with a plucky guitar which is perfect as it is one of the last songs on the album.
