Today we look at a game that was originally made for Sega Genesis but ended up being popular that it ended up going onto other consoles. Today we look at Earthworm Jim.
The game was released in 1994 and was developed by Shiny Entertainment. The game is a side scrolling 2D platform game where you have to rescue Princess What’s Er Name from the enemies. How does an Earthworm gain super powers? Well, a super suit falls from the sky of course, which gives him all these crazy abilities of a human.
Throughout the levels the aim is to avoid the obstacles and kill or try to avoid all the enemies. To defend yourself you can either use your gun or whip them with your head. At the end of each level you have to usually fight a boss and some of the most well known ones are Psy-Cow, Queen Slug-For-A-Butt and Professor Monkey-For-A-Head.
Between each of the levels, the player has to play a game called Andy Asteroids which is a racing game that is played behind the worm driving a rocket to beat the Psycow through a tunnel avoiding all the obstacles.
The game received a lot of positive reception and people praised The fluid animation and hand drawn style. The game won Best Genesis Game of 1994 by the magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly. It was so popular that it was released on other gaming platforms and also there was a second game produced.
