Back in 2001 Kate Winslet was part of the animated film Christmas Carol: The Movie. In the film she provided the voice of Belle and the song What if was written to tie in with the films theme and her singing about the end of her relationship with Scrooge and is wondering what could of been.

The song was rumoured around the time to be a single that was specifically written for the christmas number one. Due to the coverage and the rumours of this due to the tabloids, the song entered the single charts at the position of number 6 in the UK Charts. It narrowly missed the top spot and was beaten by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman with Something Stupid.

It wasn’t just the UK that the song did well in the charts – it went to number one in Austria and Ireland and did extremely well in Netherlands, and Switzerland. The song even went on to win the 2002 OGAE Song Contest.

All the money that was raised from the single was donated to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Sargent Cancer Care for Children due to the request of Kate Winslet.

The song may be only a one off but there has been an extensive number of covers of the single. There was a dance remake by Ronny V released in 2004 and various renditions on the reality television shows.
