The change of the title to “Webster” caused a major rift between Alex Karras, his wife Susan Clark, and ABC. The show originally focused on an ensemble cast, but Emmanuel Lewis’ character quickly became the primary focus.

Emmanuel Lewis’s mother became aggravated with crew members who continually picked him up to carry him to filming. Eventually the head of Paramount Television had to tell the cast to stop.

During the show’s run, Webster was 5 to 8 years old, and Emmanuel Lewis was 12 to 16.

Webster always referred Katherine Calder-Young Papadapolis as “Ma’am” because she wasn’t his Mom, but that was the closest sounding to “Mom”.

The show was originally to feature only George and Katherine, portraying a newly married celebrity couple attempting to settle into normal domestic life. After Emmanuel Lewis was signed to star in an undeveloped and undefined series for ABC, the network decided to combine the two.
