A Little Thing Called Stories – Books and the Adaptions

This is the last article in the theme of all thing stories and ending on a topic that effects all of us – something we love also something we hate – when Hollywood Studios decide to take the words off the page and make them into a movie. Now, we all have love hate relationship with this concept – we all create characters and locations in our mind and when the big movie companies take an idea we either love or hate the outcome as to what they have produced as they have either ruined your ideas of what the book could be or they have turned it into something magical.

There are many films that I have ended up disappointed with the outcome of the film however there are some where I think the film has been better. To finish off this topic all about storytelling here are some of the books / film choices i enjoy and which version.

Bridget Jones Diary – The Film and Book

Now this is going to be the only one on this list where i cannot decide. I really enjoyed the books, they were a great laugh and very entertaining. That is why I also love the film for Bridget Jone’s Diary. It was cast so well and it’s one of those films that will never go out of date as it is just so funny and entertaining to watch. It is one of those films that will always be a comfort blanket.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – The Book

Out of all the Harry Potter books, this one is my favourite and was a set in two minds when I knew they were obviously going to turn it into a film. My mind was so set in the ways that I wanted the film to be like my imagination but if you not the Director of the film you know that’s not going to happen. I remember being disappointed in certain aspects of the film. I remember that they left a few bits out of the book that also made me disapointed.

P.S I Love You – The Film

I read the book way before the film came out and was really not looking forward to the visual production because I found the book such a let down i was not excited about the re-incarnation into a film. i found the book disappointing and like all of Celia Aherns books a depressing and un fulfilling ending. However, I eventually got round to watching the film when it was released and I found it a hell of a lot better then the book. The film is re-watchable, the book is not re-readable.

The Wedding Date – The Book (Based on the book Asking For Trouble by Elizabeth Young)

I read this book ages ago and only realised that this film was version of Asking For Trouble when I noticed the plot lines were really similar. The film is ok, pretty dull at some points and I think it is because of the casting in it. The book is funny and really entertaining and I have read it many a times.

The Secret Lives of the Shopoholic – The Book
This is another book that was ruined by the film for so many reasons – the first was it was set in the wrong location – it should of been set in London – especially since the second book is all about New York City. I think if they had done a Bridget Jones on it and stuck to the roots of the book it would of been so much more successful but the fact they Americanized a book that was meant to be all about Britain it completely ruined everything about it.
