Hello! Tell us all about your show!

Hi! Man or Bear is a darkly comic new play following three generations of women navigating life in the shadow of male violence. Inspired by the viral TIKTOK question ‘Would you rather be alone in the woods with a man or a bear?’ it blends realism, music and bold physicality to explore fear, survival and female solidarity. The ‘bear’ becomes a surreal embodiment of the threat many women carry from girlhood.

Man or Bear turns a viral question into a visceral theatrical reckoning!

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Hannah Maxwell, Sh!t theatre, Abandoman, House of life and SO excited about In Bed with my Brother bringing back, ‘We are Ian’. I saw it 10 years ago when Sarah and I were up with our first show Zero Down and LOVED it!

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

Yes four times. The first was straight out of drama school. I was acting in someone else’s show in a venue right out in the sticks. Even then I got the bug.

It’s my third time bringing a show I’m more creatively involved in. It’s A LOT more work but a lot more rewarding.

I wish someone had told me to market all pre-fringe performances as previews/WIPs and not to do more than five so you can be eligible for Fringe First. We had someone from the Scotsman wanting to nominate us in 2016, but they couldn’t as we’d had some performances the previous year. We were a bit gutted as we just didn’t know and the show had changed massively between then and the fringe.

I’d highly recommend watching the sunrise from Arthur’s seat at the end of the run and just reflecting on everything you’ve achieved over the month.

Support your fellow artists, go and see each other’s work.

And finally don’t eat dodgy eggs! I got food poisoning on my first day in 2024 when I brought my solo show, ‘You’re SO F******* Croydon!’, and it was tough, let me tell you!

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

Ok well this has definitely changed a bit. Back in 2016 I’d start my day with a Berocca and supermarket croissant to soak up the alcohol from the night before. Go flyering, do the show and head out again.

I’m much more sensible these days. I try to do a bit of a warm up, vocal and physical. I can’t really eat much before I go on stage, maybe a banana or something for energy. Again go flyering, do the show, catch a couple of other shows or meet a friend for dinner. Then bed. Staying well and doing my best work is the most important thing to me nowadays. It’s a long month. I need to pace myself!

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

I love David Bann. It’s a veggie restaurant with great cocktails. I also love Ting Thai.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

Just that, performing. In the real world I have to juggle a million different jobs to make ends meet. Waking up everyday for a month and your job being acting. It’s the dream.

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

Pillow case.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

Great question. I hope other people are answering this because I need some tips! Using your venue pass to get you into shows for free. If you have a kitchen, make a packed lunch. Walk everywhere…
