Hello! Tell us all about your show!

This is a one-man rom-com all about a fat gay comedian. George is broken-hearted and flees to the fictional Isle of No’Man to stave off men, but very quickly finds himself the centre of a love triangle. The show feels like stand up, but it’s story telling. It’s funny, but also very hopeful.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

I’ve barely had time to see who else is going up there. But my friend Kitty Cassis would’ve been one I was most keen to see! Kitty’s Salon of Dreams unfortunately starts whilst my show is still on! Grrrrr!

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

The best advice I’ve seen is to eat a vegetable. It’s so easy to get delicious food and often I’ve stayed places where I didn’t have access to a kitchen, so when you get offered a vegetable, take it! My advice is to not get your hopes up. It’s easy to imagine your whole life is going to change, but actually, the joy is in doing your show, not whatever comes next.

If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?

It’s my first time under the theatre genre! So I’m looking forward to comparing theatre and comedy, maybe being less stressed about getting as many laughs, but more worried about sticking to my lines!

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

I try to do an activity in the morning, a run or a swim. Something that gets me out, but not too early. Then take it easy, have a bit of lunch and flyer but have fun with it and don’t burn out. Then surrender to some nerves, head to the venue and do the show. Afterward, see shows! And write. There’s so much creative energy, a great place to work on something new. Then I go to bed too late after all the adrenaline of the day.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

This is a tough one because I’ve eaten in so many places. But I have such fond memories of Cafe Piccante. They do a half pizza and half chips and it’s so reasonably priced and I could just sit and watch something on my phone and decompress. The food is simple but great.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

It’s the shows. The audiences are so up for it and it’s so rare to be able to perform anywhere every day, unless you’re in the west end. For performers it’s like summer camp. Even if you’re having a hard day, going and doing your show just feels smashing.

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

In the past I’ve enjoyed re-reading some books. One summer I made it my mission to read all the Bridget Jones books. Bridget is such a pal, it was lovely.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

See cheaper shows. It can be tempting to stick to the shows that are obviously doing well and have some famous people in them. But if you take a punt on something pay what you want or free, you can see something wonderful for a fraction of what it’s worth.

If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?

On my Insta or TikTok. https://www.tiktok.com/@martinjdixon

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

Funny, romantic, sexy (and gay, if I were to steal a 4th).
