Hello! Tell us all about your show!
A musical – entirely made up on the spot! It’s dangerous, it’s spontaneous, and as moving and uplifting as any musical. The audience suggest ideas, settings, characters, style and off we go for 70 minutes of high energy, hilarious, highwire fun. People who love musicals come dozens of times, but people who say they don’t like musicals also love our show because of how it deconstructs (and then reconstructs) the musical live in front of your eyes. The cast and band are the top of their game. It’s a great night out.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Nina Conti – always. Crybabies. And I’m very intrigued by Tether.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
Yes this is my 21st Fringe! Take it easy. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Go to see experimental shows from overseas – especially the clowns. Support the unfunded companies. Stay hydrated. Get out of town from time to time. Don’t take anything too seriously.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
I dislike routines so avoid them wherever possible! But I tend to do a lot of writing when I am at the Fringe. Especially over breakfast in a quiet café (if you can find one – get out to Leith perhaps). Some years I’ll binge watch shows, other years I won’t see much at all until I’m about to go home.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
There are some big foodies in our company, and we often look forward to a night out at The Kitchin – or any of the new restaurants that pop up every year. I loved The Little Chartroom. This year I’m eyeing up Eleanore and Ardfern.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The audiences. Edinburgh has always loved Showstopper! and the feeling is mutual. I also love the sheer range and variety of amazing acts. You can see 7 or 8 shows a day if you want. There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world. Not on this scale. And every single person can find a show that appeals to them, no matter how niche you think your life-experience and interest is, there is something almost tailor-made for you.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
No but I try to take a break at some point if I can and get out into the countryside.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Stop drinking.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@ameggido @showstopperthemusical
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Great night out!
