Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of Muse. They are such a unique band and whilst I don’t listen to them very much anymore I adore their musicality. Some of their songs are masterpieces and this month I thought I would delve into some of their fantastic music videos.
Time Is Running Out – Muse
Why did you choose this particular video?
This is my favourite song of Muse’s and I don’t listen to it very often but when I do it has to be played loud as it is a song with so many elements. The music video is interesting as some of the edit choices create something that is unique and very on point for Muse.
So, what is the narrative?
The video is based around a war room table like a lot of Muse’s video it has a political angle and environment. As the music video goes on the environment becomes more and more chaotic.
Favourite parts of the video?

The first thing that strikes you in the music video is the colour grade. It is quite dark and focusses on the dark blues, teals and a hint of red that subtly lights the room. It is really effective and reels you into this world and the meeting that is taking place and the chaos that happens.

The shot changes are quick and again makes you want to keep watching. They go a lot of the time from an extreme close up to long shots of the location with all the random action happening. The quick paced edits brings intrigue and makes the viewer want to know more about the narrative.

The lighting throughout the video also dramatically changes throughout. One minute it is really subtle and then as the video develops it gets more dramatic and flashy as the it becomes more intense and erratic. A simple yet really effective technique.
