Improv Corner – Will You Regret That?…

If you are a fan of Art or even just looking for a new podcast to listen to then I recommend Talk Art. We have spoken about this podcast on here before but today we are going to talk about something Noel Fielding discussed on his episode which I feel is really topical in relation to improv.

If you didn’t already know, Noel Fielding is an artist and does a lot of paintings, exhibitions and sells his work away from the limelight. One of the points that he makes in the conversation between him and presenters Russell and Robert is that he paints over pieces of work he is not happy with. He also states that down the line he ends up regretting doing it.

This made me think about improv – there are so many conversations or debates about whether you should be recording improv sets or shows that you perform. Quite a lot of people believe you should just perform improv in the moment and mot record it. I am on the other side – the other opinion. By recording shows you have memories in the future you may of forgotten, it allows you to see how you can improve your stage presence and performance and finally it allows you to see how far you have come or improved in improv.

I am glad Noel spoke about this because it allowed me to re-explore this topic again for improv. A lot of teams are now recording shows for social media clips but looking back can be pretty special.

As a Video Editor, I still have my old edits when I first started as it allows me to see how I have developed and what skills I have developed along the way. This is the same with improv. Having old films means you can look at it and realise your confidence have risen.
