I always get so excited when I find a new restaurant that I find is worth writing about. I would say this is one of Perth’s best kept secret but since it has been there for twenty five years, I guess, it is not that hidden. However, if you are not from the area you may not of heard of it and I feel it is my duty to make sure that you do.
63 Tay Street is located in the same road as the name – right near the river and also about a ten minute walk from the station. It is an award win ing restaurant and run by Christopher Strachan and Fraser Bell. It has limited seating (nine sittings) and relies on booking ahead.
From speaking to the owners , it is a great way to run a restaurant as it means they can always plan ahead and save waste. However, there is another thing that they do that reduces waste – they have no menu. You pay for either a four or six course meal and you don’t know what you are having until it turns up. It means that everyone has the same meals and there is less food waste. If you have any dietary concerns you write to them on the notes of booking.
Don’t be put off by not knowing the menu as the chef will blow you away with food. I went in there hating goats cheese for example and they introduced me to a hard cheese version and it changed my mind on that version.
The food blew me away as all the combinations were delicious. Even the dessert which can be very miss in fancy restaurants was amazing and the best I have had in a posh location.
I urge you to visit this place, it will be worth it and the food is astonishing.
