Tell Us about:
Your latest single you have released:
Garden Plot and Something Strange are love songs, one written by Eleanor, the other written by Joel. Eleanor’s song, Garden Plot, is assertive and practical, whereas Joel’s song, Something Strange, is self-conscious and yearning. These songs will tell you all you need to know about our relationship with each other.
Your favourite lyric in this song:
“I will lick your papercuts/Dry your eyes and cotton tops” because it encapsulates being there for the one you love in every way.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
Staring at Birds! It’s a bittersweet song that will be on our upcoming album. We’ve already planned out the music video. It’s a song about things that are missing, and trying to go on.
Your favourite song to play live:
We love playing Hill To Die On, which will be released on our upcoming album in July. It’s an angry song about a bully, and when we take it out, we can either use it to unite our audience (if they’re friendly), or as a weapon against them (if they’re rude and rowdy).
The song that was the longest to write and why?
Garden Plot actually took a few years to get perfect. We wrote it in 2023 when we were with our old band Sweet Anna, and although the lyrics were completed quite quickly, we really struggled to arrange all the musical instruments together, despite playing it live at nearly all of our shows. It wasn’t until we started recording it at the end of 2025 that we finally nailed down the problem: this whole time we’d been trying to play it as a basic heavy grunge record, but it was begging for some sweetness.
One of your previous tracks you would recommend for first time listeners of your music and why?
We would recommend ‘Did I’. It’s a beautiful simple song, and has more personal significance to us than anything else we’ve made. We wrote this song back in 2022, and it was the first song we’d written, after 3 years of experimentation together under Covid lockdown, where we felt we finally had something that worked. It was the second song we recorded as a DIY duo, and the last song that we attempted to mix and master ourselves.
Dream collaboration:
We want to make a super band with Dave Grohl and John Fogerty. We know they’re already friends with each other, and they are two of our favorite songwriters who are still alive. Chris Rea would have been on our list too – we were devastated when he passed away just four months ago. We have nearly all of his records on vinyl and CD, including his insane 125-song Blue Guitars album. We always dreamed that one day we would get big enough that he would be willing to play a slide guitar solo on one of our songs!
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Eleanor: I’d like to say excitement, but really I’m just quite focused when we go on stage because I want to make people feel happy to be there, and I want them to hear us properly. I need to assess whether I’m about to kick anything over, trip over cables, to map out how much range of movement I have on stage, and then I need to remember what I’m gonna say in between songs. Because we’re autistic, we’re not the most spontaneous communicators – but we prepare so we can connect with our fans.
Joel: I focus on supporting Eleanor and any bandmates who happen to be playing with us that night. I put pressure on myself to keep it all together because I know the songs so well and I’m well-trained at improvisation from years playing in jazz bands. Sometimes I get the audience involved by running off the stage and giving a random person my guitar to play – I love it because I believe everyone is musical, even if they don’t believe it themselves.
The track that is most fun to play live:
Probably Something Strange, because the bridge really, and we mean really makes people stop and listen.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Water, lyrics notebook and pen, instruments and cables. What else do you need?
Describe your fans in three words:
Smart, friendly, authentic
A song released in the last few years by an artist or band you wish you had written:
One from the radio – As It Was by Harry Styles, because it’s melodic and haunting, and it’s got great hooks!
One from the London underground scene (that we only heard live and you won’t find it online) – Ophelia by Poltergeist LDN, because it’s a masterpiece of modern hard rock.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
Expect to see us everywhere! We’re going to do as many shows as we can, keep writing great songs and releasing an album in the summer. We’re recording it as we speak!
