New Album Deep Dive – INTERVIEW – I Dreamt I Had Insomnia, Blindness and Light

Welcome to a feature where we sit down and talk to bands and artists about their latest albums to find out all about it. Today we speak to the band Blindness and Light about their latest album I Dreamt I Had Insomnia.

Hello nice to meet you, tell us about yourself!

We are an informal collective of like minded musicians that are into post-punk/indie. We are spread across North Wales, Northern England, Argentina and 2 members live in Tokyo. Singer/song writer guitarist Colin M Potter is based on the Isle of Anglesey. Redundancy 3 years ago left Colin with time on his hands. There was unfinished business with a bunch of unfinished tracks which quickly gathered momentum.

Tell us about the new album

“I Dreamt I Had Insomnia” is our 2nd album. All tracks were recorded on the Isle Of Anglesey in North Wales though mixing and mastering was carried out in Germany at Outback Studios who did a fantastic job with the more technical side of the process.

It’s available on all streaming platforms as well as CD and limited edition coloured vinyl….available on BandCamp (link at the end).

Favourite track in new album and why?

This changes every day to be honest. I love the sentiment of “Letter To Future Generations” which is the last track on the album. It’s basically a letter apologising for the mess we’ve left for the generations to come and hoping for the best for them. It signs off the album with “Yours truly, CMP” ….. which is me!

Tell us a bit about the recording process, was it fun to do?

Recording can be fun but generally it’s very intense and time consuming. Songs are always finished off in the studio. We use the studio as a creative instrument in itself.

We’re recording the 3rd album at the moment but this won’t be ready for another year at least.

What inspired the album name?

It came to me in a dream

Tell us the idea behind the album cover?

We’ve always been fans of the 4AD label and their cover art. Vaughan Oliver was the graphic artist responsible for the iconic art for bands such as Pixies, Bauhaus, The Birthday Party, Cocteau Twins, Throwing Muses, Dead Can Dance etc. We worked with Anze Ban Virant to create something influenced by this that would fit in perfectly with the 4AD stable.

Which one of your songs on the new album do you think will the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?

Probably “Shards”. This has a brass section. Our brass specialist from Barnsley in Yorkshire is away in Tokyo for a year.

Why should people listen to the album?

If you’re into post-punk/indie guitar then it’s a must!
