Here at The Phoenix Remix, we have been sent some previews of shows heading to the Edinburgh Fringe. So over the next few weeks, we will be reviewing these so that you can keep an eye on them or potentially go and see them at the festival. Meka Mo’s show runs between the 20th and the 30th at this years festival.
Meka Mo has a huge personality that as soon as she approaches the stage, the energy of the room changes to this vibrant, infectious atmosphere – something that you do not get a lot with UK comedians. Instead of the crowd being quiet and laughing in the right places of the punchlines, the room changes into this room that is loud, punchy and I would say like a party vibe.
This is observational comedy through the eyes of a New York comic Meka, it’s fast paced and brings this unique powerful enthusiasm to the room that creates continuous big laughs. Meka explores her view of the world right now and how multiculturalism shapes that perspective
As part of the show, it delves into her views on the United Kingdom as an American being a tourist in the country. It is interesting to listen to and there are some fun jokes and takes on her opinions of what people usually recommend she’s goes and visits.
The only tiny issue I have is the fact that Brexit is mentioned in a stand up routine ten years after it happened which is a bit tiresome. It weirdly did the rounds in stand up shows two years ago at the Fringe with a lot of comics talking about it but now it is time for it to be put to bed. However, saying that, this show is from an American’s perspective, so if this is how the world stills sees us then that is an interesting angle to think about.
The rest of the show focusses on different countries that Meka has travelled to and her adventures. There are some really hilarious anecdotes throughout.
There are also different stories about America including going to the least diverse part of the States. It delves into cultural themes which may feel uncomfortable at times but Meka has a way of delivering jokes in a fantastic way that you end up really enjoying the punch lines.
This is a show that is unfiltered, bold and really strikes a punch. It entertains the audiences on so many different levels that it is hard not to enjoy the show. Due to the pace of the routine the hour goes by in a flash.
Overall this is a show that I expect to do very well at the Fringe, due to the tempo of the routine and the constant jokes it is really jammed packed and the laughs come fast and loud.
