All this month we are talking to acts that are performing at the Liverpool Improv Festival which takes place between Thursday the 24th – Sunday the 27th of April 2025. Today we speak to ImprompTwo.
Tell us about:
Your latest improv show for Liverpool Improv Festival?
ImprompTwo is excited to premiere a brand new show for the Liverpool Improv Festival. It’s called “From Dawn to Dusk” and here’s a bit about it:
IMPROMPTWO PRESENTS: FROM DAWN TO DUSK
The 1960s, a time of antiwar protests, countercultural movements, and the “generation gap.” ImprompTwo returns to its roots with their deep dive into the gritty, American style of improvised theatre. Set in the midwest, where hard work is futile and dreams have gone by the wayside, From Dawn to Dusk explores 12 hours in the lives of people who keep going when everything is changing and nowhere feels right. Inspired by the great American playwrights, they will create a beautiful, improvised play filled with stunning silences, passion, and pathos.
Your favourite suggestion you have been given?
Wow. So many good ones, but we think Bourbon was a great one. We were doing improvised Tennessee Williams and it turned out to include a theme of alcoholism and the start of WWII. One of our most memorable show endings.
Your favourite venue to perform at:
Well, we haven’t been at the Liverpool Improv Festival before, so we can’t say that! It’s hard to pick favourite as we’re torn between the Paris Opera Hall, with its four tiers of circular seating that makes you feel as if you’re in an old movie (and holds hundreds!). That one was a Wow, look at where we are.
That said, we have to include the theatres where we feel most comfortable, where the vibe is inclusive and supportive, and the organizers are a dream: Alchemy Comedy in Greenville, the Robin Hood Festival in Nottingham, the stage at Toyen Impro, and the theatre in Uppsala, Sweden.
Improv hero:
Too many to count, and we’re too afraid we’ll leave someone out who we adore.
Dream venue to play at:
The Flock Festival in Amsterdam. Gael and Laura Dooneweerd-Perry have created this amazing space where each show is given its own set. As a showcase for improvised theatre, it’s amazing in its generosity for the overall vision of the improvisionational group.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
All the neurons are firing and our entire bodies light up. It’s so stressful waiting to go on, but once we do, all the concerns drop away and for the length of the show, we’re transported to another space.
The hardest improv suggestion to perform and why:
When we started, everything threw us. Now, seven years later, nothing is really hard. In fact, we welcome challenging. It’s all down to the suggestion you ask for, really. Since we do improvised theatre, our suggestion requests can range from “love or loss” to “what’s an external force that affects everyone?” to “give us a meaningful word.”
Essential items you always take with you to a show?
Besides us? A feeling of positivity and an open mind.
Describe your fans in three words:
Always a surprise.
What we can look forward to from you this year:
We’ll be teaching more and traveling more as we premiere three new formats this year. We’re performing at major festivals around Europe (e.g., Oslo, Karlsruhe, Liverpool, Edinburgh, and more) as well as in the States (Florida, Chicago, etc).
