Every Sunday we are taking a look at the world of books. I read a lot and always want to share my opinions on what I read, so I thought it would be fun to write reviews. Today we are looking at a book about a medium and its not what you expect…
The Other Side Of Mrs Wood (2023)
Lucy Barker
Synopsis
‘I want your reputation’, the girl said to Mrs Wood. ‘I want everything you have…’
Mrs Wood is the London’s most celebrated medium, having survived decades in the competitive world of contacting the Other Side hosting packed-out séances for Victorian high society.
But, with rival young mediums dazzling audiences across the city, the allure of London’s most established star might be starting to wane. And then, at one of her routine gatherings, she hears something truly terrifying: a yawn.
So, Mrs Wood takes on a young protégé to spice up her show. But does her new pupil pose more of a threat to Mrs Wood’s reputation than she could imagined?
– from Waterstones
Positive Points
This is a great read, it is completely engaging at the start and it has a really great story that you just want to keep reading more. It was only when I was part of the way through I discovered that the book had won awards and it is not hard to see why it is such a unique story.
Negative Points
You may be put off as it is about mediums and the other side.
Overall Review
I did the worst thing you can do with a book when it came to this – I only chose to read it because I liked the look of the cover. This does not always work in your favour but this time it did and it allowed me to read a great book i would of normally missed.
