Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hello! I am a Swiss-Mexican designer turned clown and creator of Fool’s Moon cabaret, currently in residence at Soho Theatre. I grew up in the mountains of Mexico and escaped to Switzerland at the age of 17 with the dream of becoming a fashion designer.
Two years later, I found myself in London studying at Central Saint Martins but accidentally fell into Product Design where I made The Excessively Long Shoes. These were my portal into clowning and took me to Ecole Philippe Gaulier.
The journey allowed me to enter comedy from a different angle, thinking of the visual world I want to create as a starting point. I think I make shows as an excuse to make wild, ridiculous and fantastical costumes and props.
Tell us all about your show!
Puella Eterna is a ‘self-renowned’ grandiose poet on a mission to answer life’s most existential questions. In her search for eternal life, Puella sets out to perform her most epic poem yet, a whole lifespan from conception to the after-life in under an hour. She believes herself to be the first in the history of humanity to answer the age-old question – what came first the chicken or the egg?
How did you come up with the name for the show you’re taking to the fringe?
In Roman and Greek mythology Puella Aeterna is a child goddess who is forever young. Inspired by this, Puella Eterna became the name of this poet who seeks to immortalise herself through her most ambitious work of art.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
There are so many but in no particular order I can’t wait to see Freddie Hayes, Ella Evans, Lara Ricote, Jens Radda, Claire Woolner and Anna Marie Simonsen & Marie Kallevik Straume (TROLL). Also John Luke Roberts is doing all of his solo shows consecutively which sounds like an insane marathon I am excited to witness.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe?
This is my first time going up for a month with a solo show but I have been doing the fringe for a few years in true fringe fashion. The last few years I had the honour and pleasure to perform the Blundagardens run by the incredible Lucy Hopkins and Bob Slayer, which has been a haven for artists throughout the years. They truly embody the spirit of fringe theatre and have supported countless people throughout the years to create bold, fearless, experimental work.
The best advice I’ve received is to schedule regular breaks to dip my toes in the sea and remember we are all going to die one day.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe?
I think it will involve a mix of making quesadillas, watching shows, ecstatic dancing, swimming, finding eggs and flowers, climbing rocks and a lot of coffee.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
Swap shows with someone halfway.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
I really like the sandwich place Let Me Eat, which has become my family home in Edinburgh. I just pop in to say hi to my sandwich parents and take a break on their cushions.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Scottish accents and seeing offices turn into theatres and experiencing the strangest and most magical performances there.
Top tips for travelling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?
Pack the right shoes and normalise running as your means of transport.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
A love potion, a scarf and the hair of a virgin.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Look up Mark Dean Quinn – he is a flyer genius.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
They can follow me on @paulinalenoir and @foolsmooncabaret
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Couture Cocteau Croissant
