Hello! Tell us about yourself?

I am Amanda Chong, a lawyer, poet and playwright from Singapore who is interested in exploring gender and power.

I am so excited to be taking Psychobitch to Edinburgh, starring one of my dearest friends, the phenomenal actor Sindhura Kalidas and directed by Pam Oei, who is also a veteran performer renowned for her pitch perfect comedic timing.

Tell us all about your show!

Psychobitch is a one woman show that tells the story of Anya Samuel, an overachieving journalist who has perpetual levels of excellence and nil levels of chill. Her tech CEO fiance asks her to explain the four times she’s cried in public in the course of their relationship to prove that she’s not an “emotional person”. Ever the go-getter, Anya brings her full suite of professional skills to this task and creates the slickest slide deck, complete with infographics of her menstrual cycle. The audience meets Anya at her fiancé’s tech bro office, where she is preparing to give the presentation of her life. They will follow Anya on a journey unpacking the subtle shades of toxic relationships and the concessions we make in our search for love.

Wild Rice, one of Singapore’s premier theatre companies, staged Psychobitch in August 2023, and we were overwhelmed by the response. We had a sold-out extended run with folks queuing for up to eight hours for standing tickets! One year later, we are excited to see how this show will resonate with audiences in Edinburgh.

How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the Fringe?

I identify very much as a Psychobitch and so do all my high capacity hot mess women friends. But more than that, I wanted to deconstruct the trope of a “Psychobitch” which is a term many women are labeled when they are emotional. I hope the play goes some way into excavating the deep well of gendered expectations and stereotypes around women’s emotionalism.

Have you done the Fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the Fringe.

I have never been to the Fringe before, or even set foot in Edinburgh! But our producer Shien, who took a show to the Fringe in 2023 tells me to just take it all in! It is so exciting and eye-opening as an artist, and a bucket list thing for so many of us. Of course we will also work hard at flyering – we want as many people (and psychobitches) to come see the show as possible!

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the Fringe?

I’m instantly attracted to shows with similarly loud titles such as Son of a Bitch by Anna Morris and Bat Shit by Leah Shelton. I love that these works are also one woman shows that examine different facets of gendered expectations. I feel great solidarity with theatre makers telling women’s stories, because after centuries of silence, we need to be as noisy as possible.

If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?

I can be found at @asenseoffalling. You can follow @psychobitchplay to keep up with all our Edinburgh adventures!

And finally, in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

Funny, feminist, fury.
