Hello! Tell us about yourself?

Hi! I’m Sam the Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Chalk Line Theatre. We are a multi-award-winning company based in Luton who tour new plays nationally and internationally. All of our work is socially driven, platforming marginalised artists to tell important political stories. Our last show in Edinburgh was the Untapped Award Winning Blanket Ban which was shortlisted for the BBC Popcorn Playwriting Award.

Tell us all about your show!

The Chaos That Has Been and Will No Doubt Return is based on my lived experience of growing up in Luton and the pressures young people face in impoverished communities. The fun side of this play is that it is set to the best noughties soundtrack, think Sean Paul, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Aidonia! It follows two best mates on their journey to their end of school leavers party and all the chaos that unfolds amongst that. It is told in real time, so you experience the events with the actors.

I wanted to write a play to deal with the enormity and epic-ness of what it means to grow up in a community like this,  but also about the town’s history and people. It wants to celebrate them as well as highlight the realities they live in. I was inspired to write a story which speaks to the restlessness of the working classes who are constantly repressed by our government, how easily young people can be pulled into violence and how we become a product of an environment built to suffocate us.

How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?

In classic fashion it is a line from the play! It felt like the most resonant title with what the story is trying to say.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Lots of our friends – Ugly Bucket’s show STUFFED, UGLY SISTERS by piss / CARNATION, SISYPHEAN QUICK FIX by Bettina Paris and sooooo many more! We have been in Edinburgh on and off for nearly 7 years now, so we could shoutout people forever!

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe. And if you haven’t, how are you gearing up for it?

Yes – many many times! I think the best bit of advice is the classic – look after yourself, get creative in how you market your show, support others and watch as much as you can, take it day by day and trust the process of how mad it will feel at times and a big one is MAKE CONNECTIONS. Artists and industry are everywhere, grab those coffees and chat!

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

So our days will be mixed between watching shows for future programming, flyering/marketing our play in various different ways, connecting with artists, probably washing costumes and trying to figure out how people actually manage to do ‘meal prep’ and then enjoying our performances and socialising at Summerhall’s bar.

What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?

I think it’s about making sure you can have the head space to step away from the pressures you might face at the festival, meet new people, have down time and enjoy the individual success of each day. Also go to the beach on your day off!

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

I will no doubt eat a lot of food from the Mosque Kitchen

Best thing about performing at the Fringe?

Watching your show grow and develop across the intense performance schedule. Also the chats in the bar after – come talk to us and tell us what you thought.

Top tips for travelling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?

Wear running shoes all the time and get fixing up on your excel skills!

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

Rain coat, running shoes and portable phone charger.

What’s the secret to successful flyering?

Clear pitch, creative pitch and have a genuine conversation with people.
