Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Girl With A Hawk

Tell Us about:

Your latest single you have released:

Our new single is called “Feel Me” and it came out on November 17 on Rum Bar Records.

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

“The Ones”. I felt very proud to put a song out as I had been a long long time out of the music business/scene raising my daughter and honestly did not know if I would ever have another band. As time passed and she grew and I felt I could be out more and busier beyond my day job, I knew that the fire still burned and that there was one more band I had to do and I knew who I wanted with me in that band.

The pandemic gave me time to write… and once I had the songs, I began to assemble the essential people. We began rehearsing in our guitar player Dan’s home where we could be socially distant, with plastic screens hung between us; not knowing if we would ever play live again. But, blessedly, here we all are, and I don’t think any of us will ever take being able to gather in person and be physically close and share in the experience of live music (or any kind of performance) ever again.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

Gosh – this is hard because, as it’s been said many times by other musicians – songs really are like children: you don’t want to name a favorite because you feel it will insult, possibly even hurt the feelings, of another song. And honestly they are all so much fun to make, because we love recording, and being in the studio and editing and mixing and ALL OF THAT. If I must choose I would say “The Romantic” because it was fast and easy; we nailed it quickly and it’s a simple song, and short – and probably the one that is the most directly about my personal outlook.

Your favourite song to play live:

This is so hard to answer also!! Favorite songs in general to play live are the ones we can stretch out on – go a bit wild, take chances and jam. Two of those currently are “Same Stars” and our new single “Feel Me.”

The song that was the longest to write and why?

The five songs on our upcoming EP, keep ‘er lit, all came quickly, pretty much fully formed from the ether (gratefully!) but believe me, that is not always the case, haha.

Your most emotional track:

All of the songs on the forthcoming EP are all pretty personal and a bit on the raw side but I think “Feel Me” is the most emotional, because it was produced after our dear friend, mentor, and label owner Justine Covualt passed away suddenly – and Dan Coughlin’s guitar work, especially, for us, embodies the raw pain, grief, and shock we felt at her passing.

The best lyric you have ever written:

Oh gosh… I don’t know… hahaha – I think a new one we have, called “Way with Words,” is pretty cool.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Honestly, pure joy and excitement to play with an amazing amazing band behind me and share our songs with the audience. If we play well and move one person, or make one new fan at a show, we are doing our job.

The hardest track to play live:

“Same Stars.” It has a lot of verses and words to remember, and kind of an odd arrangement.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Well, this band has not yet gone on tour – but we plan to!!! Essential items for me would be a supply of Barry’s Irish Breakfast tea, a huge stash of Ricola cough drops, a portable bluetooth speaker, and some weed edibles…

Describe your fans in three words:

Adorable & lovable: all ages, all kinds of humans;  curious, passionate, open hearted hard working people.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

OHHHH gosh… there are SO MANY…. I’m going to go with Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue”…

What we can look forward to from your band in 2024

Firstly, we need to get back into the studio to record with our new bass player (of almost one year) Daniel Bernfeld (he RULES). We have lots of songs we want to get out!! We also applied to the legendary showcase, South by Southwest in Austin, TX, which takes place in March, and we would be thrilled to get into that high profile event. We are also hoping to play Boston’s Rock n’ Roll Rumble in April, another venerable band ‘proving ground”!! Haha. And lastly, we want to write new good songs and keep playing great venues with great bands and – most importantly – have a good time!!!
