Improv

Improv Corner – Improv In The Media -Making It

There is one thing that fascinates me about improv and that is how it is portrayed in Television and Film. This is becoming more and more apparent in recent years because the comedy art form is sort of in fashion. There are some interesting topics that we can gain from these ways they are displayed so every so often we are going to look at different scenes from different shows and films.

You can find inspiration for improv in the most bizarre locations but when I saw that there was a television show by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman, I knew it was going to offer something interesting.

Making It is a crafting competition that you can watch on Amazon Prime for free if you are a member (If you watch it in the UK, it is out of sequence – episode 1 is episode 6 etc it is really frustrating but worth the watch). The show takes a number of skilled people who specialise in different styles of craft and they compete against each other to win $100,000.

Amy and Nick are executive producers on the show so I knew it would be a unique watch. I love American creative competitions – food and craft are my favourite. So when I saw this show advertised, I knew I had to watch it. It is a really great show as it highlights so many different craft styles and can leave you feeling inspired. Also there are sections of the show that relate to improv.

While the contestants are working, Amy and Nick do a variety of games that relate to improv. One week there is a game where Amy makes up what the craft tools actually do and then another week they will focus on craft puns changing the names of films or celebrities to include craft tools.

I feel this show is really great to watch as an improviser because Amy Poehler is renowned for her sharp wit and reactions and watching this show allows you to see them in a really natural way and it is really refreshing.

I urge you to watch this show for the comedy and improv as it can inspire rehearsal games or show you the talents of one of the best improvisers.
