Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – My Life Story

Tell Us about:

Your latest single you have released:

“I’m a God”

It’s a modest title!

However it’s not a reference to my on stage pop star moves but a shopping list of deities, some more deserving of reverence than others.

I wanted to highlight how we lazily award everything and everyone divine status and consider if worshiping false gods is embedded in our DNA.  I remember reading that even Prince Phillip was seen as a god by the Yaohnanen people”.

It’s a classic MLS listing song similar to 12 Reasons Why I Love Her – by juxtaposing a real god next to a false idol it creates a collage of lyrical contrasts.

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

Girl A, Girl B, Boy C (1993)

The song was four and a half minutes long, contained an orchestra recorded at AIR Studios run by Beatles producer George Martin and had a change in time signature

for the last minute that resembled a seedy striptease anthem. We never thought it would get on the radio but it got played on the biggest Breakfast show in the UK at the time – we were surprised and elated.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

My current favourite is ’The One’ from our last album World Citizen (2019). I wrote it for my wife and it was designed to be played whilst walking down the aisle.

I’ve subsequently found out that some fans have now used it for their own big day.

Your favourite song to play live:

Our recent single Numb Numb Numb, I’ve invented a silly dance for it

The song that was the longest to write and why?

“Tits & Attitude”, I had to get the balance of the lyrics right in order to not make it cheesy or over thought

It turned out that keeping the vocal delivery deadpan made the lyrics speak more.

Your most emotional track:

‘I Love You Like Gala’ a B Side from 1997 – most of the lyrics are busked live during the recording, freestyle, coming straight from the heart.

The best lyric you have ever written:

Booked in for the night

He christened her with a name

She closed in, back toward him

And they formed a crescent shape

Human as the moon

On a bedsheet sky of white

Down below the trains were rattling

Through the night

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Complete.

It’s the final act to all the hard work… writing, recording and producing is the groundwork. Performing live is like going into labour.

The hardest track to play live:

Our current single “I’m a God” – too many lyrics to remember!

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

My wife

Describe your fans in three words:

Loyal, eccentric and passionate

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

The Moon’s a Harsh M istress by Jimmy Webb

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

A fourth single by us to be released in November and the facility to pre order our next album now from here so you can get the album delivered to your door on the week of release in Feb 2024
