If there is one thing that is true about Scotland is that the Fife Coastal Path is incredibly stunning. Today we are going to look at a village I went to one day by accident and really enjoyed it. Cellardyke is located in the East Neuk of Fife. If you are visiting from St Andrews, it takes about 15-20 minutes from the bus station to the coastal village.
It has a rich history and was built in the 16th century and in the past hsa been known as the names of Nether Kilrenny and Sillerdyke, The modern name came from the name Sillerdyke, which was a reference to the sun shining off of the fish scales that were caught on the fishing nets that were left to dry in the harbour. It has a rich fishing history so you would expect it to reference it somewhere.
The village is dominated by the harbour which still plays an important part in the village today. It is not really used as a fishing port anymore but instead has a ‘pleasure boat’ ever so often.
Apparently, finding Cellardyke like I did, is pretty common. There are many articles online where they discuss that it is a hidden gem that a lot of people do not know about.
I found this village really interesting. The harbour is really quaint and so is the village surrounding it. I also liked the fact that there was some hidden areas to see beautiful sections of the sea.
