Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Fathom Farewell

Tell Us about:

Your latest single you have released:

“Vitriol” Just dropped recently and the reception has been amazing!

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

Back in 2015 we didn’t really know what we were doing or how album release cycles worked so we just dropped the audio for the “Drowning Limits” EP all together.  Dropping that was cool and it was fun for our friends but of course independently dropping music without a marketing plan will typically render an underwhelming response.  However for the “Decomposition” EP we started out by dropping a lyric video of the title track and people started singing along rather quickly.  That being our first actual “single” release felt amazing.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

Eulogy off the Kraken EP.  This track has it all.  One of our heaviest yet still has a huge chorus.  The dynamic change for the transition to the chorus is one of our favorite parts on the whole ep because it’s one of the only quiet points to break up the high energy intensity (which we also love).  Gets people jumping.  Grooves like a funk song in the last breakdown.   It’s the Neo of our Matrix of currently released material.  Vitriol is the current favorite but is not technically an album track, just a single, currently.

Your favourite song to play live:

Of our released material our favorite to play live is Eulogy.

Your most emotional track:

Save Your Breath and Kraken are tied (both off the Kraken EP).  Kraken is all about the internal struggle of someone trying to get out of bed everyday with ptsd or emotional trauma.  Save Your Breath we wrote around the time there was legislation in Canada being considered that would have every pit bull euthanized in the country.  We absolutely love all the fur babies and that absolutely includes the pitties.  In just Ontario specifically thousands of dogs have been euthanized just for even looking like a pit bull terrier, and this definitely makes us extremely emotional.  I’m getting emotional just talking about this.

The music video tells a different story of something terrible occurring in America even today, that makes us equally emotional.  Roughly 1,000 dogs are killed by police per year during raids on false tips or misconstrued addresses, where in those cases the families did not break the law in any way, and the cops for whatever reason ended up raiding the wrong house.  The current legislation states that a police officer may legally shoot a dog, regardless of if it’s a false address or not….if they bark at them.

In the music video our vocalist, Alex plays a character who’s home is broken into on a false tip and dog is shot by a corrupt police officer, who is later arrested for a different misconduct later in the video.  We feel this legislation needs to be mended to discontinue innocent dogs of innocent families being shot for simply doing what dogs do….they bark.  We hope this song and video will one day create a space for this conversation to occur.

The best lyric you have ever written:

What a question haha.  For me, depends on the day.  For everyone else, depends who you ask.  I try to maintain the same quality of thought and concept through everything I write so I’m sure there’s something for anyone who enjoys any of my lyrics in all of our songs.

My favorite ever is in an unreleased song we’ll be dropping in the near future.  That said today, of what we have released, I really love how I depicted a backwards demonic possession (the subject of the possession clapping back and possessing their demon) in our latest single “Vitriol” in the breakdown.  The lyrics are “Help me help im falling, see my on the ceiling crawling, arch my spine and make an awning, look directly in my eyes, im here, there’s so much pleasure in your fear, these pins and needles make it clear, paralyzation, has left you subject to this Vitriol, reigning supreme.”  Big horror fan over here so this was a fun one.  We feel like it would fit the vibe of Stranger Things if it didn’t exclusively use music from the 80s lol.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Electrified.  Energized.  Full of love and purpose.

The hardest track to play live:

Our bassist Dustin wrote some amazing songs we haven’t dropped yet and let’s just say they’re a bit more technical than anything we have ever dropped.  That said of what we’ve released, either Mutiny, Soul Within The Shadow or Eulogy.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

SOCKS.  UNDERWEAR.  TRASH BAGS FOR DIRTY CLOTHES TO GO IN THE TRAILER AND NOT THE VAN.  Nintendo Switch.  Don’t really gotta bring snacks or non perishables because we stop at gas stations either daily or bi-daily, but our guitarist Alicia typically makes some prepared goodies for weekenders that are to die for.  Our van also has a dvd player so we got a big book of those.  Anything to keep your mind off the hardest part, killing time between shows.

Describe your fans in three words:

Beautiful.  Spectacular.  Transformative.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

This is another question that depends on the day.  Most recently, Spirits by Nothing More for many reasons but the biggest one being how amazing that song must be to perform live.  Such a massive, dynamic song.  Absolutely perfect roller coaster front to back.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

More music for certain.  There’s a lot going on behind the scenes in preparation for these releases and most efficiently optimizing our chance for big opportunities next year, so we only have 2 shows this Summer, at Bushwick House in Brooklyn NY for PRDGMS Album Release featuring our friends in Null, Gannon and What We Owe and August 5th in Ashby MA co-headlining The Big Kahuna festival featuring more of our friends than we can mention here.  Keep up to date with everything we are doing here: linktr.ee/fathomfarewell.
